Counselling
that meets you where you are

Hello, I’m Karen
I know that – however stuck, anxious or confused you may feel – within you is a trustworthy source of guidance that knows exactly what is right for you and how to move forward.
You can get out of this stuck place. You can trust yourself. You can find joy and healthy connection. Even in a world that is full of uncertainty and pain.
As a person-centred counsellor, I understand that we live in a culture that teaches us not to trust ourselves. To disregard our feelings, desires and distress and focus on external markers of success. At the very least, this will eventually suck all the fun and energy out of life.
At worst, it means facing struggles and pain in isolation – often with a harsh inner critic telling us we’re getting it all wrong and have no right to feel bad or to need support.
The person-centred approach gives you back to yourself. It connects you with an inner source of healing and guidance which will help you move through the world with greater certainty, purpose, pleasure and connection.
Because it centres your unique experience – not any psychological theory or “expertise” – it is especially useful for people whose lived experience has been marginalised and discounted in dominant cultural narratives.
I am actively working to make my practice more inclusive. This includes making counselling affordable for more people – see my hybrid counselling and ONEplus counselling options below. I affirm gender, sexuality and relationship diversity, including polyamory and kink. I aim to make my service as accessible as I can – please discuss your needs with me (I work in a ground-floor counselling room).
I can work with you in person in central Bath, online or by phone. I offer:
Conventional counselling: usually weekly, either open-ended or for a fixed number of sessions
ONEplus counselling: an innovative approach designed to create meaningful change in just one session.
Hybrid counselling: offering the benefits of conventional counselling (and more) for half the usual cost.
Conventional counselling
Having regular sessions with me – usually weekly – creates the stable space which makes it safe to explore what’s troubling you at the depth and pace that’s right for you.
Research shows that finding a counsellor with whom you can build a relationship of warmth, confidence and trust is more vital to the effectiveness of counselling than anything else – including what model of counselling they offer.
So our first step will be to have a no-obligation initial session, to give you a sense of what it is like to work with me. We will explore what you hope to get from counselling, and whether open-ended counselling, or a fixed package of sessions, is the best fit for you.
Either way, we can work together for as long as it feels right for you.

ONEplus counselling
This is a highly focused service designed to identify what is blocking you from making a change or resolving a difficulty – then create a simple plan to get you unstuck. It’s built around a carefully structured 60-minute session, with a pre-session questionnaire and a post-session review by phone.
The ONEplus package is a complete service, and most people who choose it don’t need further counselling – but more sessions are available if you want them.

Hybrid counselling
Hybrid counselling combines one-to-one sessions with group workshops to offer all the benefits of conventional counselling for half the cost. In fact, I think you’ll get more out of it than you would from traditional counselling.
Although every client is unique and comes to counselling with their individual experiences, strengths and goals, there is a consistent set of key concepts and techniques I share with every client to help them reframe their difficulties and get unstuck.
Exploring those concepts in a small group means we can use our private sessions much more effectively. We will be able to go deeply into your specific issues in our confidential one-to-one sessions, leveraging the knowledge you’ve gained in the workshops.
Hybrid counselling works out at £110 per month, compared to £220 per month or more for conventional counselling.
But this approach doesn’t just keep costs down. Being part of a supportive group can give an extra boost to your capacity to grow, change and reach your counselling goals.
